The man who saw the future

By Catherine Blackledge. www.watkinspublishing.com

William Lilly was a working astrologer who lived through the English Civil wars of the 17th Century. He is famous, perhaps notorious, for having predicted both the death of King Charles the First, as well as the fire of London. His feuds with other astrologers of the day were epic, his friendships with individuals on both sides of the wars were sincere, and his almanacs were best sellers. This little book is clearly the result of considerable research; despite that it wears its learning lightly and has an engaging style. Far from being a dull academic list of dates and events it is something of a page turner. I finished over a weekend and I was sorry it was not longer.

When I had finished it, I felt that in some sense I’d met the man and rather liked him. He wasn’t a saint by any means. He’d married a rich widow for her money and status, and this match allowed him the leisure to study his chosen subject. He was sometimes called before parliamentary committees to explain on threat of imprisonment or worse, particular passages in his published works. On at least one occasion he manufactured evidence to save his skin. After the restoration when King Charles the 2nd was on the throne, he was seen as one of the troublemakers and much of his work was censored. On the other hand, he was kind when his circumstances permitted it and above all else he had scruples.

One of the problems with divination by any technique is that to do it properly requires a certain amount of personal steeliness. Quite often the results are not the results you might have hoped for. If you are a fee taking professional, as Lilly was, there’s always going to be a temptation to sugar coat or even lie about bad news. I don’t think Lilly ever intended to frighten or shock people, but he did take his predictions very seriously and he deplored others who would tell their own clients news that was good for fees rather than the news contained in the chart.

This desire to follow the chart wherever it took him seemed to have gained him clients amongst the Royalists and Parliamentarians, and the book describes a couple of occasions when he was approached by agents of Charles the 1st for advice – advice that was not taken.

Lilly was a master of horological astrology, a branch that I’ve spent virtually no time looking at, and there are several charts and a description of features he thought important that would make an excellent toehold for someone embarking on the study of this subject. In medical matters, Lilly was generally given a jar of urine to look at, the common practice. This lead to the nickname of ‘piss prophets’ for the profession, and of course it completely misses the point. In fact there are a few diseases that can be diagnosed this way – Porphyria turns it a rather fetching shade of blue for example. What Lilly was actually interested in was the time he was given the sample since this determined the chart to be examined. By all accounts, Lilly had a great deal of return business. We can conclude that he was very good at what he did.

Naturally enough, the vast majority of the text is taken up with his professional life, what happened after his retirement and the circumstances of his final days, but there is a fascinating final section about the fate of astrology itself after Lilly’s death. The proposition that it fell from favour partly as the result of the enlightenment, but also because it was viewed as somehow associated with the lower classes. Various Vagrancy Acts have been passed since then had lumped together astrologers with the indigent and feckless. To my astonishment, as recently as 1989 it was still illegal to take a fee for an astrological forecast; presumably the sun sign horoscopes in the magazines and newspapers of my childhood were simply ignored.

In any case, a fascinating book. Highly recommended.

This is part of my efforts to learn western tropical mundane astrology via the John Michael Greer course available via SubscribeStar and Patreon. I’m picking out various interesting events from recent and not so recent history in the western world and taking a look at the charts via the filter of what I currently know. Take with a pinch of salt.

You might have noticed that the chart and the first paragraph mention the word ‘tropical’ which is the standard way of placing the zodiac according to the western tradition. This places Aries Ingress of the Sun on or around the 21st of March at each year. This is the scheme that JMG uses in common with the majority of western astrologers and has been for the last two thousand years or so. Since it was first adopted, the apparent position of the constellations has moved in the sky by around 20 degrees because the Earth actually wobbles on its axis; the technical name for this is the precession of the equinoxes. So the constellation of Aries is no longer in that 30 degree wedge of the sky that we call Aries.

The alternative is the sidereal system which works on the assumption that the 30 degree wedge of sky we call Aries is actually where the constellation of Aries happens to be in the sky. Two thousand years ago there was little difference but we’ve wobbled on a bit since then.

I mention this because I’ve had a few days of rather low energy in reaction to my second vaccination against COVID and I spent a great deal of that time casually clicking around various web sites that talk about mundane astrology. In the process I found some information about sidereal astrology. Hence the clear distinction I’m drawing here.

JMG does not appear to have much time for natal astrology, and I’ve personally found the little I’ve seen of it to be disappointing; I don’t recognise much of what I’d regard as significant parts of my character in the standard description of those in my Sun sign. So I was particularly startled to see that the overview given by the Fagan/Bradley school of sidereal astrology seems to spot on. I am investigating further.

That said, here’s the chart of the Trump inauguration:

Inauguration 2017

An inauguration chart’s influence lasts as long as the president does, so four years in this case.

From my perspective it seems that there’s a lot going on here and on the face of it the chart seems to be quite muddled. There’s a triangle of helpful aspects between Mercury, Neptune, and the Moon in a formation called a Minor Grand Trine. There’s an additional trine between Uranus and Saturn but opposition between Uranus and Jupiter. The Sun has only a single aspect, a sextile with Mars. There’s also a square between Saturn and Mars, and a series of other minor aspects that I’m ignoring.

Going round the significant planets:

The Sun represents the head of government, Donald Trump. As an inauguration he is in the angular tenth house in his detriment of Aquarius simply because that always happens with inaugurations. However, unlike the startlingly grim 2021 inauguration, there’s a trine with Mars in the 11th house. H.S. Green suggests that a good aspect between the Sun and Mars gives success to military operations and benefits the health of the country at home and abroad. My own conclusion about the state of America during the 2016-2019 period is thing did seem to get better for the average individual, there was certainly an employment boom by late 2018. The most notable military operation was the drone attack that resulted in the death of an Iranian general followed by a subdued response from Iran. Unusually for the US, the four years of the presidency saw very little more military adventurism.

The Moon represents that part of the general public able to make its voice heard in politics, a sector of the population I have come to think as the establishment. It is involved with Mercury, media, pundits, and the chattering classes, and Neptune – the forces of unity and mass movements via the minor grand trine. I believe this represents the four year long concerted opposition to Trump from the establishment and media including an extended narrative about collusion with Russia, and several attempts to obtain an impeachment. It’s a minor grand trine and although they saw some benefit from the approach during the four years, in the end all these efforts failed to dislodge the president early.

Mars represents the votes of men and conflict. The square to Saturn is very bad and H.S. Green says “serious difficulties in national life, discontent on the part of the people, discontent by or with connection with the army, navy, or police” (my italics). This seems to be the key point to the final six months of the presidency when the George Floyd protests were in full swing.

Saturn has a trine with intercepted Uranus and a sextile with intercepted Jupiter but he seems to be dominated by the alarming opposition to Mars. In general terms this is very bad for the government, serious disturbances in national life, infectious diseases may increase and some epidemic may occur (according to H. S. Green).

Finally there’s Uranus, in trine with Saturn and opposition to Jupiter. Perhaps this can best be interpreted as a pair of effects spread out over time, Saturn in opposition to Jupiter stands for additional power for the newly governing Republicans which was certainly true at the inauguration. Opposition to Jupiter represents a strengthening of the opposition for a time, and this happened at the mid-terms when the Democrats clawed back some power. Did this make much difference in the end? No, and I see that both Uranus and Jupiter are in an intercepted signs – preventing full expression of matters within their domains.

Looking at the houses:

The first house is the house of the ordinary people. It has Taurus on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Venus. Venus is in a succedant house and has a semissquare to the Sun, she is also in her exaltation, so she is mildly dignified. With the exception of 2018 the Gini coefficient which measures income inequality stayed flat, things didn’t get much worse for the man on the street.

The second house is the house of national economy. It has Gemini on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Mercury. Mercury is afflicted by its presence in a cadent house but supported by trines with Neptune and the Moon. The economy continued to grow during the Trump presidency until COVID hit in early 2020 at which point the economy took a major hit as it has worldwide.

The third house is the house of transport, communication, and the media, this has Cancer on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the Moon. The moon is in a cadent house and also in its detriment, but is supported by a trine to Neptune and a sextile to Mercury. It would seem that the mass (Neptune) media in particular had an excellent four years. Although for many of the people working in this sector, Trump was not their ideal choice he certainly offered a great deal of opportunity for commentary. It was also highly effective – and the period is notable for the emergence of ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’, where a significant proportion of the US population were convinced they were living in some kind of police state by the mass media.

The fourth house is the house of resource industries, agriculture, and the political opposition, it too has Cancer on the cusp and is also ruled by the Moon. The shock of being in opposition did not appear to modify the attitudes and policies of the Democrats in any particular way, but it did act as a unifying force over the period of the four years.

The fifth house is the house of gambling, travel for pleasure, sports, and entertainment, it has Leo on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the Sun. The Sun is in an angular house, but is also in his detriment. He is supported by a single sextile with Mars. This feels like the Sun is mildly dignified at best, possibly even neutral. Trump himself is a noted owner of resorts and casinos, as well as a reality TV star so it feels appropriate that the Sun should rule this house, but in terms of actual trade over the four years it was largely business as usual until the COVID era struck.

The sixth house is the house of public health. It has Virgo on the cusp so it is ruled by Mercury suffers from his location in a cadent house and he is peregrine, however he is supported by trines to the Moon (in this house) and Neptune. It also contains Jupiter afflicted by his position in a cadent house, peregrine, in an intercepted house, in opposition to Uranus, and only supported by the sextile to Saturn. H. S. Green suggests that a badly afflicted Jupiter in the sixth is indicative of ‘much sickness in the country’ – certainly accurate for 2020. The presence of the Moon in a cadent house and in her detriment but supported by Mercury and Neptune suggest a positive impact on business conditions and employed people, certainly true in the first three years of the presidency.

The seventh house is the house of foreign affairs (excluding trade) has Scorpio on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Mars. Mars is square to Saturn which is very bad but supported by a sextile with the Sun. The selection of Donald Trump as president was greeted first by shock, and then four years of mockery internationally. It’s probably fair to say that the reputation of the US was somewhat diminished during the four years of this presidency.

The eighth house is the house of foreign trade, it has Sagittarius on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is badly afflicted, and foreign trade suffered during the latter COVID part of the presidency, down as much as 16% in 2020. Also notable is Saturn afflicted by opposition to Mars is present in this house H.S. Green’s comment is “Death of aged persons, of some state official or functionary ….” and “if much afflicted, it is unfortunate for the health of the country.” This certainly was borne out by both the passing of Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the disproportionate impact of COVID on the elderly.

The ninth house is the house of higher things such as the courts, establishment religion, and universities, it has Capricorn on the cusp and is therefore ruled by afflicted Saturn. The four years of the presidency saw considerable deterioration in US universities as places of learning rather than places of indoctrination, and after the 2020 election the courts became political battlegrounds. Many churches came out in opposition to Trump which made them rather inaccessible to those voters who supported him.

The tenth house is the house of government, but not the head of that government, also in Capricorn and therefore also ruled by afflicted Saturn. The way the US was governed in this period was not terribly effective (witness the response to COVID, bot a federal and state matter). Conversely it also contains relatively well aspected Mercury which suggests the government will be popular with the people and the Republicans did surprisingly well in the polls up until the final year.

The eleventh house is the lower branch of government, it has Aquarius on the cusp and is therefore ruled by intercepted Uranus. Uranus has a supporting trine with Saturn but a debilitating opposition to Jupiter. Once again the pair of effects over time. The Republicans started control of both the House and the Senate at the beginning the four years of the presidency but lost control of the House at the mid-term elections.

The eleventh house also contains Mars badly afflicted by his opposition to Saturn. H.S. Green says “...the Government may be much embarrassed, may encounter strong opposition, and much ill-temper be shown on one side or the other”. Self explanatory.

Finally the twelfth house is the house of Institutions, this has Pisces on the cusp and is therefore ruled by mildly dignified Neptune also present in this house. Neptune is part of the minor grand trine. During the four years the actual machinery of government seemed to work at least no worse than before and attempts were made to cheapen access to healthcare. It seems to me that the volume of argument on healthcare went down during the four years although the volume of every other argument increased.

Synthesis

With this mass of detail I’ve found this a difficult chart to try and interpret but my conclusion is that it is dominated by three features of the aspect pattern and the planets Mars and Saturn.

• The minor grand trine speaks of the relentless negative media campaign against Trump, and not just in the US. Useful to those behind it but largely unsuccessful for the period of this chart. I note that the campaign went silent after the Biden inauguration and Trump has been erased from public discussion since then.

• The opposition of Mars and Saturn speaks of the deterioration in the standards of political discourse culminating in the George Floyd protests.

• Afflicted Saturn in the eighth house presages a pandemic.

• Afflicted Jupiter in the sixth house signals a public health crisis.

• Intercepted Uranus with good and bad aspects signals both success and subsequent difficulties for the Government.

The first point has required a considerable application of hindsight on my part and I would certainly not feel that I could have predicted it given my current state of knowledge. Also I do not have any view on how the timing might have been predictable. New Moon Sun conjunctions are the only method I’m aware of at the moment so that part of the analysis will have to be next.

Lest anyone think I’m blowing smoke, I am posting the following image from my Betfair account as of Friday 7th May 8am, about an hour after the market closed.

Betfair account 7/5/2021

Betfair is a betting market available in the UK. It allows you to bet on sporting and political events - not against the company itself, but against other gamblers. Betfair takes a cut of your winnings if you win and you can choose to back a wager if you believe it will happen, or lay a wager if you think it will not happen. Laying allows you to profit from events that you predict will not occur - provided of course that they actually don’t occur. In short, Betfair the sort of website your mother warned you about!

This particular bet was about a by-election in Hartlepool, an unexpected election to UK’s Parliament at Westminster because the MP holding the seat had retired early. Hartlepool is a deprived port town in the north east of England and really its most defining characteristic is that it has been a Labour safe seat since 1945. From 92 to 2004 it was held by Peter Mandelson who was the Director of Communications for the New Labour project that gave the world Tony Blair. Peter Mandelson was the third most important individual in the New Labour. It is a town with a huge symbolic status in the Labour movement.

On Thursday May the 6th 2021 Labour lost the seat to a Conservative, increasing the Tory majority in Parliament to a substantial 82. I won my bet at a profit of £17.10, not including Betfair’s cut. That’s the price of a good hardback book or perhaps an upmarket bottle of wine to put that win into international perspective.

It’s certainly possible to argue why this sea change has occurred and I have seen at least three possible explanations in the last hour but none of them really explain why I made this bet last Sunday.

As a matter of fact I was thinking through the impact of the Lunar Eclipse 26th of May 2021, which was recently published by JMG in the usual place. One of the comments he made led me to to believe that the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) may well be facing a leadership contest in the second half of the year. If you want to see exactly what he wrote you’ll have to become a Patron or SubscribeStar supporter.

Leadership contests are tricky for any political party because a it will turn inwards and leave the battlefield free for the other side to do what they like more or less. It’s particularly hard for the PLP because the party accepts not mere debate with but actual contempt and rage at their opponents, whether or not those opponents are PLP members or elsewhere. In the aftermath it’s even harder for them to work together to formulate policy and present it to the public.

What, I wondered could trigger such a contest? Well there’s a symbolically important by election coming up and on that very Sunday Sir John Curtice, a famous and effective psephologist was rather gloomy about Labour’s chances given the polling data he was seeing. I then looked at the odds on Betfair. They use digital odds and they sat at 1.57. In the US that would be -175, or 0.57/1 using the traditional British expression. The implied probability is about a 64% chance of a loss by Labour.

My final move was to look up the rules in place for triggering a leadership contest in the PLP. Naturally enough if the current leader resigns, there is a contest, however a contest can also be triggered if 20% of sitting MPs demand it.

So I had three pointers leading me to conclude that Hartlepool would change from Labour to Conservative. Betfair odds, the comments of John Curtice, and finally the fact that such a loss would fit with later events predicted by JMG. I made that bet.

Over the following few days the odds moved in my favour and there were a number of articles and videos put out by Labour supporters about why a Hartlepool loss would not be a disaster, or even why such a loss would be little to do with current leadership. It’s possible to cash out of a Betfair position before the market closes and I could have done so profitably from the day after I made my initial wager - but doing so leaves money on the table. I simply let things take their course and at round about 7am today the results were declared, the market closed and the bets were settled.

I believe there will be a delay at least until the end of May while pressure is applied to Sir Keir Starmer (current leader) to see if he can be persuaded to resign. That timing is based on the effect of the eclipse as described by JMG. If that fails, a conspiracy will form to see if the necessary 20% of MPs can be persuaded to take the risk of triggering a contest - and it will be a risk because if Sir K. wins that contest, the short and even long term careers of the 20% are toast. The contest will be in full swing by summer, and the papers will be full of traded insults; it will be extremely damaging to Labour’s future chances. I await developments with interest, and it’s worth noting that my conclusions regarding a the likelihood of a contest are entirely mine and not based on any further data, charts, or any predictions or augury by anyone else

So why a Betfair wager, particularly on what seems like a relatively risky proposition? In some English speaking cultures common gambling is considered quite scandalous although investments are naturally perfectly OK. I don’t agree with this attitude. In my case I could do it because the money I risked in the first place was not a huge amount and losing it would have no impact on me, or mine, or my peace of mind. Neither would a win. Nor is taking advantage of my views on politics or mundane astrology unfair. I did actually check this with JMG at MM although it was after I’d placed the bet. The point he made was that the knowledge was available to all and easily acquired by those who are interested. I’m not sure I’d use the adjective ‘easy’ but it’s certainly available to all who care to look.

From my perspective the real point of a manoeuvre of this nature is that it focuses your attention rather pointedly on the situation. Place even a few pounds on a bet and you have skin in the game so to speak. You can learn something win or lose, that’s what makes it useful.

HRH Prince Philip died a few weeks after the period where JMG had made a prediction of a death in the UK Royal Family, which is a matter I intend to write a post on in due course. In the meanwhile, I note that he died in office so to speak as the Queen Consort. That is pretty much standard for the UK these days. Being a monarch or consort is a job until the natural end of life and so with only a few exceptions since the beginning of the Tudor period most of them have died in that state.

This is in distinct contrast to the US. Although it’s not much remarked upon, of the 46 presidents we have seen so far, eight have died in office. At about 17% it is actually quite a dangerous job.

The situation becomes even more interesting when you look at when they were elected:

William Henry Harrison (9) elected 1840. Natural causes.
Zachary Taylor (12) elected 1848. Natural causes.
Abraham Lincoln (16) elected 1860, 1864. Assassination.
James A. Garfield (20) elected 1880. Assassination.
William McKinley (25) elected 1900. Assassination.
Warren G. Harding (29) elected 1920. Natural causes.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (32) elected three times - 1932, 1936, 1940. Natural causes.
John F. Kennedy (35) elected 1960. Assassination.

Every twenty years since 1840, any president elected that year died in office, usually but not always in that term. Furthermore with the exception of Zachary Taylor, only presidents elected in that 20 year cycle died in office.

The pattern apparently ended with Ronald Reagan elected 1980. However it’s worth noting that Reagan himself was the victim of an attack in 1981 that very nearly proved fatal. Wikipedia reports that he was close to death when he arrived at George Washington University Hospital. Prompt action there saved him and he is notable as the first US president to survive an assassination attempt.

George W. Bush completely evaded the pattern as did Thomas Jefferson (elected 1800), and James Monroe (elected 1820). The pattern is far from certain and it’s not at all clear that it could be called astrological in any sense beyond the fact that there is a cyclical nature to it.

Which brings me to the inauguration chart, 20th January 2021 for the 2020 election of Joe Biden. JMG has published a long commentry on this one which he described as “relentlessly malefic” at https://www.subscribestar.com/posts/222892 (this is public I think).

More recently he’s mentioned that timing of events can sometimes be worked out for looking when a new Moon (a Moon in conjunction with the Sun) is opposite, square, or conjunct important parts of another chart.

On the 28th July 2022 the new moon will be at Leo 5 degrees 38 minutes. This puts it in opposition to the Sun, Saturn, and Jupiter from the original inauguration chart. It also put it square to Mars and Uranus in the original inauguration chart.

Here’s the blended chart, the original inauguration chart with an additional moon in red in Leo.

The 2021 inauguration chart with the new moon from 28th July 2022

What can we make of this if anything? The new moon is in the angular 4th house with Cancer on the cusp so it rules here, but peregrine and seriously afflicted. H. S. Green says that such a situation suggests the people may suffer and be discontented. Troublesome questions from the affairs of this house (agriculture, mining, the political opposition) may disturb the nation. Raphael is equally discouraging talking about food shortages, resource extraction issues and is “very evil for matters signified by the 4th house."

The new moon is square to its position in the inauguration chart which is odd and my immediate guess is that this represents some kind of conflict amongst the establishment.

I’m going to end this post by reminding everyone that this is written from the perspective of a rank beginner, and I’m certainly not sure of anything beyond the fact that I will be watching the US news extremely carefully next July. In the meanwhile I plan to carefully examine the standard chart for the 28th July 2022 and see if anything springs out.

Here's the chart:

I believe the trine between Jupiter and Mercury is just outside the usual orb for mundane astrology. As far as I can tell, most software uses natal orbs which are slightly more generous. My software is coming along nicely but I'm not yet able to host it in the cloud and in any case I'm looking for test cases.

So, I can now make an offer to all and sundry. If you would like a mundane chart for any place and time to about 4500 years each side of now, drop a line to andy dwelly at gmail. My name is all one word in that address.

I'll need the latitude and longitude, and the time as a universal time since the conventions in different parts of the world have varied quite considerably over the years.

I can return an otherwise copyright free PDF for your own use or publication. At a pinch I can do JPEG format too if needed. I'll need an email address or some other way to get the file back to you.

This is the second blog post in a series where I pick an interesting political event from history and examine the appropriate charts according to the rules of Mundane Astrology to see if I can spot any signs. I’m no more than a beginner at this all advice is welcome. The previous post in this series looked at the year of the Brexit referendum, starting with Aries Ingress, London 2016 which fell on March the 20th 2016 at 4:31 am. The campaign had slightly more than 3 months to run at that point.

The context:

This chart is Cancer Ingress 2016 which falls on the 20th of June 2016 at 10:35pm and the vote itself will take place on the 23rd of June. The political fighting between Remain and both the official and unofficial Leave campaigns has been hard fought with considerable passion on all sides – and then on the 16th of June, MP Jo Cox, 42, Remain supporter, wife and mother, was murdered in the street near her constituency office by a far right Leave supporting constituent. By mutual agreement campaigning was suspended for a day, and I think it’s fair to say that the country was collectively horrified.

Here’s the chart:

Cancer Ingress London 2016

The rising sign is Aquarius which is fixed, so we can expect the immediate consequences to last to the end of the year. Once again, the aspects form an unusual configuration and in this case, the rare square of squares - a Grand Cross – is the astrological equivalent of every car and burglar alarm in London going off simultaneously. I jumped out of my skin when I saw this.

Clearly, there’s a catastrophe in the offing, but in a two sided political conflict one side’s rout is the other side’s victory. Were there any signs as to who gains and who loses in this chart?

Analysis:

The Sun represents the head of government, at this time the Prime Minister David Cameron. He is supported by a trine with Uranus (activists and pivotal individuals) and is conjunct with Venus but suffers from an opposition to the Moon – that part of the public that is capable in political terms.

I suspect this reflects the situation that the murder of Jo Cox by a clearly Leave supporting assassin actually helped the cause of Remain. Polling was quite frequent at this time and although there were signs that Leave was ahead by the 10th, ,this dipped after the murder as people, women voters in particular, re-examined their opinions.

In the meanwhile, the absurd stories about the financial catastrophe that awaited the UK if it left were still being pushed by the mostly Remain leaning establishment (the Moon), badly damaging their standing with the public.

The Moon represents that part of the public able to make their political views heard in government, which is congruent with the London based establishment in the UK. This group of people largely supported Remain, naturally enough as were best placed to take advantage of the opportunities membership offered. The Moon is in her detriment in Capricorn and stands in opposition to both the Sun and Venus, so it is poorly placed. This is first sign that Remain is not about to get its way in the referendum.

JMG tells us that Mercury represents the chattering classes, and I’ve tentatively concluded that he may also represent travellers and immigrants as well. In any case Mercury is taking part in the grand cross, standing in opposition to Saturn and square both to Jupiter and Neptune. The only plus side it is in its rulership and an angular house.

If any institution represents the chattering classes in the UK it is the BBC. They were well placed to make their views heard by the country since their coverage was broad and well funded. It also conveniently followed the Government line and as a consequence much of their reputation for impartiality was lost and has not so far been recovered.

We also see another sign that Remain is about to be on the losing side because both travelling in general and the lives of immigrants in the UK or planning to enter the UK is about to become significantly harder.

Venus represents women voters, she is conjunct with the Sun and therefore combust (thanks to JMG for clearing that up). She also stands in opposition to the Moon. She doesn’t really get help from it’s placement or from any positive aspects so Venus is not in great shape. In ordinary times this might be significant but compared with Saturn, Neptune, Mercury, and Jupiter it sinks into the background.

Mars is the planet of conflict. He is is in his rulership in Scorpio but in a Cadent house and with some minor poor aspects semi-square to the moon and inconjunct with Uranus. In many respects he seems to be sitting this one out but his appearance in the 9th house is significant.

Jupiter represents big business and financial interests. Membership of the EU gives many advantages to this groups and they were strongly Remain. Jupiter benefits from it’s placement in an angular house but is in an intercepted sign, unable to express itself and disastrously involved in the grand cross. It is in opposition to Neptune (representing mass movements and unity) and square to Mercury and Saturn. The oncoming problems for Remain supporters seem particularly clear here.

Saturn represents the views of the countryside and small towns, He is close to the Mid Heaven giving him power and located in the 10th house which is hugely significant. He is also part of the grand cross, now looking very bad indeed for Remain.

Uranus is the planet of activism and pivotal individuals. He has some minor bad aspects with Mars and Saturn but is helped by his trine with the Sun. I suspect this represents the murderer of Jo Cox and the unintended (by the murderer) slight bump to the Remain side. This narrowed Leave’s lead in the last few days but was not enough to eliminate it.

Neptune is the planet of mass movements and unity. He is in an angular house and benefits with a sextile to the moon, but he is also in an intercepted sign that prevents him from expressing himself, and takes part in the grand cross. As if this wasn’t all bad enough, he is retrograde. Unity is not something this chart expresses.

Looking at the houses we see the 1st house, the house of the common people has Aquarius on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Uranus. Uranus is in a fairly neutral position in this chart so this is not especially suggestive. The first house contains a weak Neptune much afflicted by the grand cross. H.S. Green suggests this suggests trouble and fluctuation in political power caused by the afflicting planets – a powerful square Saturn (the views of the rural places), Mercury (pundits and perhaps immigrants),

The 2nd house is the house of the national economy. This has Aries on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Mars. Mars is also fairly neutral suggesting that for the period of the chart, the economy will not be impacted. However it contains a mildly afflicted Uranus which H.S. Green suggests fluctuations and losses in money matters. In fact, the exchange rate of the pound against the Euro had begun to rise as speculators assumed that the death of Jo Cox was going to help the Remain cause. It crashed quite badly on the announcement of the results so there was plenty of fluctuation to go around.

The 3rd house is the house of internal transportation, communication and media. It has Taurus on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Venus. Venus is combust and afflicted but compared with the planets in the grand cross it seems minor and indeed the overall impact of the referendum in these areas was fairly low.

The 4th house is the house is the house of agriculture, mining, resource industries and the countryside. Also real estate. It has Gemini on the cusp and so is ruled by Mercury. It also contains Mercury although he is badly afflicted by the grand cross. H.S. Green suggests amongst other things discontent amongst land workers. At the time, much of the UK’s fruit and vegetable harvest was gathered by cheap labour brought in form cheaper parts of Europe. This seasonal work was about to suffer considerable disruption.

The 5th house if the house of speculative finance, gambling, and tourism. It has Gemini on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the badly afflicted Mercury. In particular, those who were speculating on the Pound recovering its previous value against the Euro as it had started to do after the murder of Jo Cox were badly burned when it fell sharply when the result was announced. The low value of the Pound also discouraged tourists from the UK although it would have been an advantage for Europeans visiting. This house also contains the Sun and Venus both who stand in opposition to the Moon, although the Sun gains some support from Uranus.

Both Raphael and H.S. Green suggest that an Afflicted Sun in the 5th is a sign of the illness and death of theatrical folk. Although 2016 had already seen a large number of actors and musicians die, from July onwards we lost Caroline Aherne, Ken Barrie, Kenny Baker (R2D2), Jean Alexander, Jim Perrie, Pete Burns, Sir Jimmy Young, Craig Gill, Keo Woolford, Andrew Sachs, and Peter Vaughn. 2016 was actually quite notable for the extraordinary number of famous people who died.

The 6th house is the house of public health, the workers, and the military. It has Cancer on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the poorly placed Moon. The UK defence budget continued its long term decline but despite this it was a relatively peaceful six months for the UK defence forces to March 2017.

The 7th house is the house of foreign affairs. It has Leo on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the Sun. The Sun is in a mixed state, opposed by the moon but in trine with Uranus and in the final few days of the referendum the decision could perhaps have gone either way. However the house also contains a badly afflicted Jupiter in an intercepted sign who is caught up in the grand cross. Raphael states that an afflicted Jupiter in the 7th is a sign of disputes with foreign powers in connection with trade and financial questions, that was certainly bourne out by events.

The 8th house is the house of foreign trade. It has Libra on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the poorly placed Venus. Trade did not immediately suffer after the referendum but it was quite clear that leaving the EU which was in part a trade organisation would certainly lead eventually to trouble.

The 9th house is the house of the Courts, it has Scorpio on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Mars – which it also contains. This is a cadent house and Mars is mildly debilitated however the real warning sign is the presence of Mars in this house as well as ruling it. H.S Green says that Mars in the ninth house is an indicator of some “Active Forward Movement” and “Foreign and colonial trade is likely to suffer, and some dispute arise out of it.” Raphael is similarly grim suggesting “troubles in colonial affairs and affects their trade and commerce”.

The 10th house, the house of the government and the executive branch is equally significant. It has Sagittarius on the cusp and is therefore ruled by the very badly afflicted Jupiter. It contains an afflicted Saturn, close to midheaven and drawing power from it. It seems to me that this house is the key to the whole chart where an overconfident Prime Minister is about to be taught a very severe lesson. Both H.S. Green and Raphael agree on this point that an afflicted Saturn in the 10th is a very bad sign indeed for the government. So it was to prove. David Cameron had resigned within a month and the UK endured two additional elections and substantial changes in cabinet over the next few years.

The 11th house is the house of Parliament. It also has Sagittarius on on the cusp an is also therefore ruled over by an afflicted Jupiter. Parliament was largely Remain (73% of all MPs supported it) and appeared to be astonished by the outcome. It also contains an afflicted Moon which Raphael believes shows changes in Cabinet that was certainly the case. H.S. Green describes an afflicted Moon I the 11th as “Government is unfortunate”, another correct prediction.

Finally we have the 12th house, the house of institutions, with Capricorn on the cusp and therefore ruled by the powerful afflicted Saturn. The main impact seems to have been silence – there was very little said by the charities, NGOs, or those institutions that you might have expected to have a view one way or the other. Naturally, those organisations for whom silence is the central tenet, remained silent.

Synthesis

I’ve been warned about free associating but from my obviously naive point of view, it does seem that this chart has a key which is the grand cross with one corner located close to the midheaven with Saturn. In mundane astrology Saturn represents the rural hinterlands and along with Neptune (unity) Mercury (communication, trade, transport) and Jupiter (big money). Three areas saw trouble from the decision. Trade and transport across borders became would become harder. The chattering classes started to go through the Kubler-Ross cycle and nearly 5 years on are only just beginning to emerge. Big money and large corporations were able to substitute cheap offshore labour for the more expensive UK kind and benefited from heavy EU regulations keeping smaller rivals out of the market. ~That’s all gone. As for unity – well a decision to leave is the exact opposite.

Saturn however stands as an exception to the other three planets in the grand cross. The Remain vote clustered heavily around cities whereas the Leave stronghold tended to be in the smaller towns and countryside. This is the side that won of course.

Saturn has another role in other forms of astrology and hermeticism. That is the role of a stern teacher. There’s no doubt that a lesson was delivered. For the best part of 25 years since the Maastricht treaty was signed the British Establishment struggled with the European question and although they may have strongly suspected that a significant proportion of the inhabitants of this island disliked what the EU was evolving into, they carefully refrained from enquiring.

It’s a strategy that can hold up for a quite a while but as events have shown that when the strategy collapses it collapses completely. Perhaps the lesson here is that it would have been better to find ways to accommodate Eurosceptics rather than ignoring them for so long.

This leads naturally enough to questions about Malefic planets (e.g. Mars and Saturn) and their role in affliction. I wonder if in fact in a square or opposition we could consider a malefic to be the afflicter rather than the afflicted? As always, answers on a postcard would be welcome.

Backcasting is a term from the currently fashionable field of Machine Learning. It simply means presenting your algorithm with some historical data and seeing if it capable of predicting the rest of the story. I’m trying my hand at the same thing using the techniques of mundane astrology. I’m re-examining some old charts to see if I can spot the signs that would have told me what was going to happen.

There’s a danger of applying too much hindsight to these situations but I’ll try and look for signs that both agree and disagree with the outcome. Apart from Brexit I hope to look at the Iraq Wars, the Falklands War, the Vietnam War, the arrival of Kennedy, Nixon, Donald Trump, Margaret Thatcher, and Tony Blair on the international scene, then perhaps the First World War and back into the past. I’m open to other suggestions although my historical interests mainly lie with the West.

 Introduction

I’m starting with Aries Ingress London 2016. The context is that Prime Minister Cameron has recently won an election with a majority making him the leader of a Conservative majority government since 1992. He has promised a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in his manifesto, and followed through with that promise – although he was not obliged to. Possibly he was emboldened by his desire to settle the issue once and for all and by his success in the Scottish Referendum of 2014. The Brexit referendum will take place on the 23rd June 2016. There was an official Remain campaign headed by David Cameron, an official Leave campaign headed by Boris Johnson and an unofficial Leave campaign headed by Nigel Farage – who had too many enemies in the establishment to win official status.

 Here’s the chart:

Aries Ingress London 2016

It has the fixed sign of Aquarius rising so its influence will last until March 20, 2017.

The feature that jumps right out is the green triangle of three trines, I didn’t know the name for this when I first saw it and mentally tagged it as a meta-trine (meta means x of x, so meta data is data about data for example). It turns out that the usual name is a Grand Trine. Three planets in support of each other. Such a situation must be unusual and my impression is that it must represent some significant positive force for the year ahead – but what exactly is that positive force and will it impact the referendum for Leave or Remain as the two sides dubbed themselves?

The second feature is that both Pisces and Virgo are intercepted signs. Planets in these regions will not be able to express themselves fully. This is significant in this chart.

Finally, we have the ominous presence of Mars in the ninth house Saturn in the tenth house.

Analysis

The Sun represents the head of the government – David Cameron in this case. It has a supporting trine with Mars but is otherwise unaided. On the other hand there appear to be no detriments either.

The Moon represents that part of the public able to take part in politics, the PMC or establishment. In the case of Brexit there was a considerable majority that supported Remain side. It is peregrine but is found in an angular house and benefits from a trine with Uranus (the planet of significant individuals and activists) and a trine with Saturn (the planet of small towns and the countryside). However it is inconjunct with Mercury - the sign of communication.

Mercury is the planet representing communications, the chattering classes (those who work for the magazines, papers, and the BBC?) and significantly Mercury is the classical god that protected travellers. The question of Immigration became a significant talking point as one of the two Leave campaigns made it a central issue during the debates of the year. Mercury is in a poor state in this chart, in its fall in Pisces, in an intercepted sign, and inconjunct (as sign of frustration) with the Moon. It is also very close the Sun (less than 4 degrees) and so it might be considered Combust. This is a point I am unsure about.

Venus represents the point of view of women, she is in her Exaltation in Pisces but Pisces is intercepted preventing the full expression of her powers. She is square with Mars to her detriment.

Mars represents the votes of men and also conflict. He is the planet closest to the Midheaven and gains strength from that, and a trine with the sun. However he is square to Venus.

Jupiter is the planet of big business and money. It is in a poor state being in an intercepted sign and suffering from a square with Saturn and inconjunct with Uranus.

Saturn is the planet representing small town and the countryside. He is peregrine but benefits from being in the grand trine with the Moon and Uranus.

Uranus is the planet of political activists and significant individuals. He benefits from being part of the grand trine with the Moon and Saturn.

Neptune is the planet of mass movements and unity. He is in his rulership of Pisces but Pisces is intercepted in this chart

The first house is the house of the ordinary people. Aquarius is on the cusp and it is therefore ruled by Uranus - political activists and significant individuals. I think this can be usefully interpreted as the impact of Nigel Farage, the independent politician and long term anti-EU campaigner getting a good deal of influence during the campaign with his involvement in the unofficial Leave campaign. Scarcely anyone in either the Remain or the official Leave campaigns seemed to get as much airtime.

The second house is the house of national economy. It has Aries on its cusp and is therefore ruled by Mars. Mars is in a fairly good state in this chart and so the economy was largely unaffected by the referendum or it’s outcome.

The third house is the house of transport, communication, and the media. It has Taurus on it’s cusp and is therefore ruled by Venus. Venus is in an intercepted house and therefore unable to act.

The fourth house is the house of resource industries. It has Gemini on the cusp and is therefore ruled by Mercury. This predicts a poor year for mining and agriculture. Agriculture certainly benefited from the Common Agricultural Payment policy and the replacement UK scheme is unlikely to be so generous in the long term so this prediction appears to hold at least for farming.

The fifth house is the house of gambling, travel for pleasure, sports, and entertainment. Pisces is also on the cusp here, mercury rules and this area is also in for a bad time. Loss of the right of freedom of movement has had a disproportionate impact on UK concerts and musicians who made much of their income in Europe. Acting has had a similar problem and the days when professional players of sports could simply move to a European club (and vice versa) is now lost.

The sixth house is the house of public health. Cancer is on the cusp and this house is therefore ruled by the Moon. The moon is in a reasonable state in this chart and there were no significant public health situations during this period.

The seventh house is the house of foreign affairs (excluding trade). Leo is on the cusp and this is therefore ruled by the Sun. The Sun’s condition is adequate with a supporting trine from Mars. This suggests that relations will be at least cordial and suggests that in the matter of Brexit Cameron will get the Remain result he wanted. As we all know – this didn’t happen. The seventh house also contains Jupiter the planet of big business (definitely on the side of Remain) in an intercepted sign and therefore unable to promote his side of the argument.

The eighth house is the house of foreign trade. It has Libra on the cusp and is therefore ruled by intercepted Venus with a square to Mars. This suggests that foreign trade – a significant part of the EU offering will be badly affected.

The ninth house is the house of higher things such as the courts, establishment religion, universities, and (oddly) air travel. It has Scorpio on its cusp and is therefore ruled by Mars. Mars is in this house and in his rulership, close to the midheaven. He is only afflicted by his square to Venus. This suggests conflict with the courts, universities, and religion playing a part. Air travel is also likely to see some conflict. All these institutions played a significant and noisy part, before, during and after the referendum. H.S Green says that Mars in the ninth house is an indicator of some “Active Forward Movement” and “Foreign and colonial trade is likely to suffer, and some dispute arise out of it.” Raphael is similarly grim suggesting “troubles in colonial affairs and affects their trade and commerce”

The tenth house is the house of government, but not the head of that government. The government was strongly remain throughout the campaign going as far as to spend 9 million pounds sending a leaflet to every household I the United Kingdom describing how bad it would be to leave the EU. This house has Sagittarius on its cusp and is therefore ruled by Neptune (mass movements and unity), but Neptune is intercepted. This house contains also contains Saturn. H.S. Green believes that the impact depends on whether or not Saturn is afflicted but Raphael is clear that this is a disastrous sign for “government, Prominent people, and those in Authority,” under all circumstances. Given his comments on the 1939 Aries Ingress London I believe JMG takes this view as well.

The eleventh house is the lower branch of government, in the Uk’s case, the House of Commons. This also has Sagittarius on the cusp and is ruled by an intercepted Neptune. During this period, the commons showed very little unity of purpose.

Finally the twelfth house is the house of Institutions. It has Capricorn on the cusp and is therefore ruled by a Saturn that benefits from the grand trine. Throughout the year, the institutions of Britain hold up fairly well. There’s no suggestion that the referendum formal procedures were anything other than fair although the campaigns were bitterly fought over.

Synthesis

This is quite a lot of information. It seems to broadly trend in one direction however. The Grand Trine suggests some unusual force is at play consisting of notable activists, and feeling in the small towns and rural parts of the country. This is reinforced by the establishment, and the absurd claims of ‘Project Fear’ where there was an attempt to scare people into voting Remain that backfired badly. If we go round the signs, the interception of Neptune (unity) and Mercury (travellers and immigrants) along with Jupiter (big business) points to Leave.

Then we have the houses; the fifth house suggests problems for the entertainment and sports industries The eighth, to problems in foreign trade, the ninth contains Mars which strongly suggests an active change and disputes in foreign trade. The EU was initially a trading organisation and much of the discussion subsequent to Brexit has been about how trade will be handled in the future. Obviously it’s not going to be a simple as it was in the last 20 years. Finally, the tenth contains Saturn – widely regarded as a disaster for an obviously Remain Prime Minister. In fact Cameron had resigned by July 2016.

Only the seventh house suggests cordial relations with foreign powers. This could broadly be interpreted as a sign for Remain but it could also simply mean that all the parties involved kept talking (which they did) rather than some kind of true conflict.

Coming up

Cancer Ingress London 2016: Saints and Angels preserve us!!

Notes:

The MC angle is missing. I will fix that.

Is Mercury combust? Answers on a postcard.

Just how frequent are Grand Trines in the last 200 years?

Is H.S. Green right when he thinks only afflicted Saturns in the tenth are evil, or does Raphael’s view that Saturn in the tenth is always a bad sign for a government hold?

Mutual Reception

This community is a place for the discussion of John Michael Greer's (JMG) Mundane Astrology Course, and also on the subject of Mundane Astrology in general. Mundane astrology is the astrology of political events, wars, public health (yes, COVID discussions are on the menu), referendums, elections, public protests, Monarchs/Presidents/heads of government past present and future, industries, institutions, and so on. It shows trends rather than firm predictions, although I've seen some pretty startling stuff come true on or around the predicted schedule while I've been observing JMG at work.

It is a neglected subject and I personally am just beginning my own journey into this field, so my tone is necessarily going to be one of discussion and reflection rather than definitive pronouncements. Don't let that put you off from making your own pronouncements though.

I've written some prototype charting software and performed some simple research of my own so there will be posts on these subjects from me. Anything like this on your own tools, software, software that you have found helpful, and the results of any research you have performed are also perfectly within scope.

Inevitably there are a few ground rules. Anyone can join and post but all posts and comments are moderated. There are two reasons for this policy - first of all, there will be no reposting of any of the course material here and any attempts to do so will be ruthlessly pruned. JMG gives an enormous amount for his communities but he makes a living from his writing, and I certainly don't want to make that any harder. So, if you want to see what we are talking about when we talk about JMG’s ideas, join the course (see link above). This also means that if you want to talk about something he has written, you'll have to put it into your own words. That's probably a good idea in any case.

The other reason is that I will be taking a Greer like approach to trolls, blow-hards, wokels, etc. (also my sworn enemies - garden slugs). This is simply so the community can flourish. I don't have a precise policy on this yet unlike JMG, but if you think of me as an easily shocked Victorian era maiden aunt, you've got the general idea.

Update

There will in due course be a post on the prediction regarding HRH Prince Philip (1921-2021) but not yet. That wound is still too raw.
